Quality / Parasite Hosted Spam Issues in Some Google AI Overview results?
From my review of some Google AI Overview results, there appear to be some spam & quality issues in some citations used in these results, with parasite hosted blog spam being cited as a trusted source .
For example, in the first AI Overview citation for the query "top rated top [redacted] agencies in the world" (a search refinement suggested by GOOG for "top [redacted] agencies in the world" (170 search volume monthly on Google USA) the first citation listed is from a blog article on the "Top [redacted] Agencies in the World" on a popular blog host.
The blog article in question appears to have been created by the agency mentioned first in the blog's list (the blog article list is linked from the homepage of the agency's website) and the blog article alone has many paid links from c.340 linking websites (around 90% of which are 'dofollow') according to Ahrefs. See below - the citation is on the top right hand side.
This appears to relate to previously identified quality / spam Issues in some Google Knowledge Graph results. I also note many paid links to another website listed as a citation in these results.
The reviews used in some AI overviews citations do not appear to be "helpful, reliable, people-first content"...
I've also noticiced Bing .com displays some "best"-type list results generated using AI from multiple "sources around the web" for some queries in a very similar way to Google Knowledge Graph (with some of the same citations used by GOOG for similar queries). Google displays citations for each result in their list while Bing just provides citations for the whole list.
See results for "best branding agencies" (displayed not at the top of organic results but below the 4th "blue link") on Bing UK:
